In July 2010, some cases of Champagne were found among the wreck of a ship that sank off the coast of Finnish Åland archipelago some two centuries ago, while sailing to Russia.
Among those cases were 47 bottles of Veuve Clicquot champagne from 1839 to 1841 that was discovered to be in excellent condition!
After that discovery, Maison Veuve Clicquot embarked on a research programme dubbed "Cellar in the Sea" to monitor underwater wine ageing over a period of four decades. 350 bottles of Champagne were submerged into the sea at a depth of 43 m, in total darkness and a constant water temperature of around 4-6°C.
A duplicate batch was kept for comparison. The wine tasting results will be available within 40 years.
