The company was founded in 1870, when António Alves Amorim established a small cork stopper factory in the heart of the Port wine region. Four generations later, the group operates in over one hundred countries in all continents and is a stock listed company.
With the fourth generation of the family running the company since 2001, an unprecedented investment in R&D and innovation was set in motion. Amorim has developed a vast portfolio of products and solutions, from everyday objects to spacecraft, which anticipate market trends and surpass the expectations of some of the most demanding industries in the world. By teaming up with architects and scientists, designers and engineers, artists, and athletes, Amorim has dazzled the world with cork’s endless possibilities and unexpected applications.
With sustainability as one of its pillars, Amorim is a member of the BCSC Business Council for Sustainable Development, the Forest and Trade Iberian Network, the Earth and Global Forest and Trade Network, and a founding member of the Porto Protocol. An environmentally responsible company, Amorim has developed a long-term project which integrates sustainability into all its operations, following the principles of circular economy.
To raise the profile of cork has always been the ambition of a group that takes the lead with great responsibility and commitment to the future of cork. In this context, Amorim established, in 2013, a Forestry Intervention Project, developed in partnership with forestry producers, research institutions and local authorities. Its goal is to ensure the maintenance, preservation and enhancement of cork oak forests and guarantee the production of high-quality cork.
Despite being regarded as the industry’s pioneer and the world’s largest natural cork company, Amorim was not a forest owner until 2018. For the first time in its history, the group acquired a 2,8 thousand-hectare estate in the central Portugal region of Castelo Branco. This acquisition marked the beginning of the company’s activity in forest management. With this strategic move, the company is making a valuable contribution to establishing Montados as sustainable and profitable investments, today and in the future. As part of this project, Amorim will develop an “Intensive Cork Oak Plantation”, using intensive production methods and fertigation, increased density of cork oaks per hectare, and accelerated growth rate of the trees, thus significantly reducing the time required for them to begin producing cork.
For all these reasons the company stands out as the leader in whom leaders trust. It is at the forefront of innovation, technology, and sustainability.
Cork and wine are inextricably linked. For the cork industry, this is where it all began. No wonder, then, that cork stoppers have an exclusive, iconic status at Amorim.
Within the group, Amorim Cork - the cork stoppers business unit - is the largest producer and supplier of cork stoppers worldwide, trusted by the leading wine producers. In an industry that expands and reinvents itself.

A strong investment in R&D has produced some of the market’s most groundbreaking solutions, such as the Helix system, developed in partnership with O-I, dubbed “the first major wine packaging innovation of the 21st century”, and the cutting-edge screening technologies such as NDtech, which offers the world first natural cork with a non-detectable TCA guarantee, and XPÜR for micro-granulated stoppers.
State-of-the-art production technologies, leading expertise, and unparalleled quality control are some of the reasons why the world’s top wine producers rely on Amorim Cork to guard their treasures. A landmark initiative created by Amorim in 1992, Amorim Academy is an international foundation dedicated to encourage research into wine-making and knowledge about wine.
Originally founded in France by members of the Amorim family, the Amorim Academy grants two annual awards, the Grand Prix and the Prix d’Initiative, acknowledging important scientific work around wine, developed by scholars and scientists in fields as diverse as oenology, economics, history and sociology.
In addition to financially promoting research in oenology and innovative projects around wine and its environment, the institution supports topical forums which gather experts, professionals and other stakeholders to share insights and the same passion for wine.
